Punjab Lok Sabha elections: A case study
A record 642 million Indians cast their votes in the recent general election, with increased female participation. Despite concerted efforts and extensive outreach initiatives by the state Election Commission, no parliamentary constituency in Punjab met the ambitious goal of 70% turnout in the Lok Sabha elections. Bathinda came closest with 69%, but overall, Punjab’s polling percentage stood at only 62.80%. The Indian National Congress won 26.3% of the vote, Aam Aadmi Party 26.02% and the BJP 18.53%. Both the AAP and BJP saw big increases in vote share, while the INC lost 13.82%. Under the first-past-the-post system, the INC emerged victorious, with seven seats, with the BJP losing the two it earlier held. This session looks at what explains the electoral politics of Punjab, what lessons there are for India more widely about catering to strong regional identities, and whether the results point to a wider resurgence for the INC nationally.-
