About our speaker
Leena Dhingra is a British writer, actress and teacher. From the stage and screen to the page, Leena has built a career across acting, writing and teaching. Her first piece of writing was titled The Girl Who Couldn’t See Herself. Since then, she has found her voice across an extraordinary range of creative work, both in front of and behind the camera.
Leena has appeared in productions including EastEnders, Coronation Street, Doctor Who, Doctors, East Is East and Bend It Like Beckham. She has also written Amritvela and Exhumation: The Life and Death of Madan Lal Dhingra. Her work spans theatre, television, film, literature and teaching, bringing together performance, writing and storytelling.
In support of Pardada Pardadi
The evening will also present a fundraising opportunity for Pardadi Pardadi, an Indian NGO that aims to socially uplift and economically empower girls and women in Uttar Pradesh (UP) through education, health and hygiene, community development and economic empowerment.
In Anupshahr near Bulandshahr in UP, over 6000 families live below poverty line, with girls disproportionately affected due to entrenched patriarchal norms. In 2000, Pardada Pardadi was founded to tackle these issues by providing free education to rural girls. Through your help, Pardada Pardadi is now creating a new generation of self-reliant, independent girls, and helping break the generational poverty cycle.
